Who Jesus Really Was

Repentance | Water Baptism | Who Jesus Really Was | The Holy Ghost

The name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost is Jesus!
The disciples never had a single conflict over baptism in the New Testament. Why? Because they understood the singleness or oneness of God.

Observe:
John 14:10-11 - "Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake."
John 10:30 - "I and my Father are one."
John 14:8-11 - "Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake."
John 14:15-20 - "If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you."
John 14:25-27 - "These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

Jesus said, "I will not leave you comfortless, I will come to you." The Holy Ghost is Jesus in Spirit form!

These three titles refer to the different roles of the same One God!

  • He is Father in creation
  • Son in redemption
  • Holy Ghost in his body, the Church

II Corinthians 5:19 - "To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation."
Deuteronomy 6:4 - "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:"

Listen to the Old Testament prophecy concerning Jesus
Isaiah 9:6 - "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

Now you are ready for the wonderful gift of >> the Holy Ghost!

Water Baptism

Repentance | Water Baptism | Who Jesus Really Was | The Holy Ghost

Old Testament Typology

1 Peter 3:20-21 - "Which sometimes were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ." (See I Corinthians 10:1-4)

THE TABERNACLE IN THE WILDERNESS

Exodus 30:18-21 - "Thou shall also make a layer of brass, and his foot also of brass, to wash withal: and thou shall put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and thou shall put water therin. For Aaron and his sons shall wash there hands and there feet thereat: when they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn offering made by fire unto the Lord; so they shall wash there hands and their feet, that they die not; and it shall be statute for ever to them, even to him and to his seed throughout their generations."

WATER BAPTISM HAS TWO DISTINCT MEANINGS

  • WASHING
Matthew 3:5-6 - "Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, and were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins."
  • BURIAL
Romans 6:4 - "Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death; that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." (See Colossians 2:12)

THE FOLLOWING VERSES REFLECT THE FULFILLMENT OF THE COMMAND IN THE EARLY CHURCH:

Acts 2:38 - "Then Peter said unto them, repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."
Acts 10:48 - "And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.  Then prayed they him to tarry certain days."

Acts 19:5 - "When they heard this, they were baptized in the name Lord Jesus."

HOW WAS THE EARLY CHURCH BAPTIZED?

The word baptism comes from the Greek word "BAPTIZO," meaning to dunk, immerse, or soak:    For Example:

John 3:23 - "And john was also baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there; and they came, and were baptized."
Matthew 3:16 - "And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water; and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him."
Acts 8:38-39 - "And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they were come up out of the water;the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing."

WHAT ABOUT SPRINKLING?

We simply do not find it in the scripture! Sprinkling, pouring, or infant baptism cannot be found or substantiated in the Word of God.  These are only human traditions.  Therefore, we should reject them in light of the scriptural truth.

WHAT FORMULA WAS USED?

The birth of the church in the second chapter of Acts made John's baptism obsolete.  It was updated when a name was added to it.

Acts 2:38 - "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remissions of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

The greatest legacy the Lord left to his bride (the church) was His name!

Acts 4:12 - "Neither is their salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

NO OTHER BAPTISMAL MADE WAS PRACTICED IN SCRIPTURE!

Acts 8:16 - "(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)"
Acts 10:48 - "And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days."
Acts 19:5 - "When they heard this, they were baptized in the name Lord Jesus."
Romans 6:3 - "Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?"

Jesus' name must be invoked verbally to have a proper baptism!

NOTICE THE THREE QUESTIONS PAUL ASKED THE CHURCH AT CORINTH
They are relevant to our study today.
I Corinthians 1:13 - Is christ divided?  was Paul crucified for you?  or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?"

Jesus was crucified for us, so we should be baptized in Jesus' name!

Look at Paul's own baptism:
Acts 22:16 - "And now why tarriest thou? arise and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord."

WATER BAPTISM IS A COMMAND TO BE OBEYED FOR SALVATION!
Acts 10:48 - "And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord."
Mark 16:15-16 - "And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.  He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." (See Luke 24:47.)
Galatians 3:27 - "For as any as you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ."
Acts 2:41 - "Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls."
Ephesians 4:5 - "One Lord, one faith, one baptism."

WHAT ABOUT MATTHEW 28:19?
Matthew 28:19 - "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost."

Matthew 28:19 was obeyed in Acts 2:38.  Father, Son and Holy Ghost are titles, not names.  Many simply repeat the Lord's command found in Matthew 28:19 instead of obeying it. Baptism using a three fold formula was not practiced by or taught by the disciples of Jesus Christ.

WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE FATHER?
John 5:43 - "I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall cone in his own name, him ye will receive."  (See John 10:25)

WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE SON?
John 20:31 - "But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name."

WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE HOLY GHOST?
John 14:26 - "But the comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."  (See Luke 1:35)

The Holy Ghost is not a name... It is a title for the Spirit of God in the Church today.

After coming to Norfolk in the early days of the church, I was heavily involved in teaching home bibles studies. (Sometimes 6-8 per week) I finally wrote my own one hour study meant to lead someone who is ready to receive Jesus into their life and give them instruction on “how to” become born again. This is a harvesting tool for those who are ready to move forward.

The NBE has over 150,000 published in English and has been translated into a dozen languages being used on the mission fields of the world. It can be ordered in print copy for evangelism purposes on the Pentecostal Publishing House button on the bottom left of the home page.

May God bless you as you study his word and lead people to Jesus…

No study of the Bible is more to the "bottom line" than the study of redemption and salvation! There may be many things we may not fully grasp in Scripture, but WE MUST GRASP this subject.

Click on a link below to find out more about this plan of salvation:

Repentance - True repentance is the first step to God! Repentance prepares our heart to obey the Scriptures further. Many have assumed that repentance is itself the new birth experience. It is said that if we "believe on the Lord Jesus Christ" we need not go any further, because the new birth is complete...

Water Baptism - Water baptism has two distinct meanings...

Who Jesus Really Was - The name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost is Jesus! The disciples never had a single conflict over baptism in the New Testament. Why? Because they understood the singleness or oneness of God...

The Holy Ghost - You do not receive the Holy Ghost automatically when you believe. It is a separate but dynamic experience that is part of the new birth!
